EDUCATION NEWS

  • Saginaw Public Schools announced on Friday, Jan. 2 that board secretary Kevin Rooker passed away unexpectedly at 67 on Thursday evening, Jan. 1 (he was a retired teacher who served on the school board and promoted historic preservation).  MLive
  • The Saginaw Board of Education announced the death of secretary Kevin Rooker, a retired teacher from Carrollton Public Schools elected in November 2022 and sworn in January 2023 (he regularly volunteered at school events).  WNEM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Coast Guard will activate a regulated winter safety zone in Saginaw Bay today at 8 a.m. to protect waterway users from winter hazards; vessels must request permission from Sector Detroit 72 hours ahead of entry (the zone covers the bay up to the mouth of the Saginaw River).  MLive
  • A state senator introduced the Open Movie Captioning Bill on Friday, Jan. 2 to boost captioning in films for the deaf and hard of hearing. Lawmakers will review the measure further this week + assessing its impact on accessibility.  WNEM

  • On Jan. 1, baby boy AJ was born at 5:49 a.m. at Covenant HealthCare Children’s Hospital — he weighed 7 lb, 6 oz and his proud parents received a basket of goodies.  MLive
  • Conner David Laugavitz was born at 6:56 a.m. on New Year's Day at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc Township. Weighing 8 pounds, 5 ounces, he is the first baby of 2026 for Maegan and Christopher Laugavitz from Mt. Morris.  ABC 12
