COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hope Works Mid-Michigan will open a temporary shelter at Christ Episcopal Church in Owosso starting Jan. 11 through March to help those without a place to sleep. The shelter offers 20 beds and check-in services from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.—including a light breakfast in the morning.  WNEM
  • A local police officer rescued an injured eastern screech owl on Jan. 4 from a bridge near Oak Street. Its surgery (involving pins and acrylic) is set for today as the veterinarian prepares to fix the fractured humerus.  MLive
  • Local law enforcement advises drivers to remain calm in road rage situations+staying safe by not engaging can prevent escalation. Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson and security expert Henry Reyna recommend keeping windows locked and calling 911 if you feel threatened.  WNEM

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The new spa branch — part of Hand and Stone Massage and Facial Spa — is set to open soon at 5709 State in Saginaw Township's busy commercial district near Chipotle and Tommy’s Express Car Wash, though the opening date is yet to be confirmed.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Castle Museum in Saginaw will host an MLK Jr. Day teach-in on Jan. 19 from 10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.— community members can learn about Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy.  ABC 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Starting Jan. 12, the Rx Kids program will let pregnant women in Saginaw, Bridgeport Township, and Buena Vista Township apply as announced on Jan. 6. The expansion aims to offer extra support for expectant mothers.  WNEM
  • Michigan State University’s Rx Kids program will allow pregnant women to apply starting Jan. 12 in the city, Bridgeport Township, and Buena Vista Township after funding was reduced by the House Appropriations Committee last December.  WNEM
  • Community members helped save lives at Garden White blood drives on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at locations including Saginaw while drives continue Thursday, Jan. 8, at Ann Arbor, Auburn Hills, Canton, Howell, Novi, Shelby Township, and Warren.
