COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Since 2005, the Honor Flight program has provided free trips to Washington, D.C. for veterans and continues to offer journeys reconnecting them with key memorial sites. Mid-Michigan volunteers and guardians organize each trip (showing care and respect) through thoughtful homecomings.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • Bavarian Inn Corporation donated nearly $29,000 to Make-A-Wish Michigan to help grant wishes for children with critical illnesses + raised the funds through voluntary payroll deductions and various events during 2025.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • After traveling in an RV across the country, a local writer returns home to Saginaw and finds comfort in the iconic silos near Old Town, which remind them of the city's warm, genuine spirit (a welcome back to community life).  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Twenty student teams from Bay, Midland and Saginaw counties are advancing in the A.H. Nickless Innovation Award — an annual STEM competition hosted at SVSU. They received $1,000 grants and will present their projects on April 25th at Gilbertson Hall for a chance to share scholarships up to $77,500.  WSGW
  • Central Michigan University is the first public university to guarantee graduates a job or grad school spot by offering $2,000 via its Central Career Guarantee (starting fall 2026, students must complete steps if they do not secure an offer within six months).  WNEM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Natural Resources Commission approved year-round coyote hunting and trapping that will start March 1 — reversing the quiet period from mid-April to mid-July. The move aims to help local farmers and landowners manage the growing coyote population.  ABC 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bay City's McLaren Bay Region hospital performed the first U.S. procedure using the SEISMIQ Intravascular Lithotripsy system to treat advanced peripheral artery disease. Vascular surgeon Nicolas Mouawad led the minimally invasive treatment that uses laser-generated acoustic pressure waves to break hardened plaque, offering safer options for patients.  MLive
  • Dr. Nicolas Mouawad at McLaren Bay Region is the first in the country to use the SEISMIQ Intravascular Lithotripsy system, a new minimally invasive procedure to treat peripheral artery disease by using laser-generated pressure waves (preparing patients for balloon angioplasty or stent placement).  ABC 12
  • Patrick Price, who founded Share Life Saves Lives Foundation, will host a free health event at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, Jan. 17 from noon to 6 p.m. with a benefit concert at 7 p.m., in partnership with Oakland Orthopedic and Heavenly Hearts Home Care.  Mid-Michigan NOW
