EDUCATION NEWS

  • SVSU celebrated Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy yesterday, as community leaders and students gathered on campus to honor his dedication to equity, justice, and service — marking a commitment to our shared values.  WNEM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy announced on Jan. 16 that $9 million in PFAS response grants will support 19 airports in mid-Michigan with testing, monitoring, and cleanup projects (including $300,000 to Bishop International and $340,202 to MBS International).  WNEM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting March 1, Michigan hunters can use the Hunt Fish mobile app to purchase and validate digital kill tags for deer, bobcat, bear, fisher, marten, and otter (paper tags remain available at license agents or by mail).  ABC 12
  • Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities is planning a 300-mile rail service to link northern Michigan to Detroit using state-owned rails + the public survey will guide the study finishing this year and could boost local economies.  Mid-Michigan NOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • MDHHS launched the Rural Health Transformation Advisory Council today to give rural residents a voice in shaping care + resource access in underserved communities. The council will guide improvements to health services in local areas.  WNEM
  • Michigan’s flu activity remains very high though flu visits fell slightly for the week ending Jan. 10 (4.1% of ER visits were flu-related). Health officials advise residents to get a flu shot as a key preventive measure.  MLive

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • City leaders and the county land bank are accepting bids from developers to rehab the 20,000 sqft Mason Building on the corner of East Genesee & South Washington Avenues. Built in the 1860s and vacant for over a decade, the project aims to revitalize a downtown landmark.  WNEM
  • Saginaw officials are seeking a developer to revitalize the historic WSGW building downtown; the structure, built in the 1860s and vacant for over a decade, is set to undergo transformation. The redevelopment is expected to enhance the area.  WNEM
