COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hundreds of volunteers packed meals yesterday for United Way of Genesee County's annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service to support families in need and honor his legacy. The event showcased community spirit and provided warm meals during a cold winter day.  WNEM
  • Great Lakes Dream Center applied for a 2-year, $50,000 per year grant from United Way of Bay County to support homeless services & expand local programs. The nonprofit awaits funding decisions to boost its community support.  WNEM
  • Guided Grace Family & Youth Services hosted its 3rd Annual MLK Jr. Day of Service youth book giveaway on Monday, Jan. 19, giving over 500 multicultural books to residents (an event that promotes diversity). CULTURE NEWS

  • The Castle Museum held its third Martin Luther King Jr. teach-in on Jan. 19, offering a local opportunity to explore his enduring legacy.  WNEM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy awarded $9 million in grants to 19 local airports to address PFAS contamination from firefighting foam; Bishop International Airport got $300,000 and MBS International Airport received over $340,000 for testing and cleanup efforts.  WSGW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Captain Kevin Srnek retired after 35 years with the Kochville Township Fire Department — he trained new personnel and managed emergencies with dedication. His colleagues encouraged community members to thank him for his outstanding service.  WNEM
