COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mid-Michigan events offer fun this weekend. Saturday features Taylor Swift-themed ice skating at Hoyt Park (12 p.m. to 4 p.m.), a comedy show starting at 7 p.m. in Flint, Freezefest with food and music in Bay City, and dinosaur displays and a free movie in Midland and Bay City.  MLive
  • Four community leaders (Nicole Luczak, Jennifer Vannette, and Jack and Janet Nash) will earn the Drum Major Award for Community Service during the 17th annual Great Lakes Bay Region Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration in Saginaw County, where Mamie Thorns said the event will share the dream to inspire youth.  Mid-Michigan NOW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State data reveals that Essexville Hampton Public Schools led Bay County with 37.7% of its 2018 graduates earning a four-year degree by 2024 (above the state average), while Pinconning Area Schools recorded 25%.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Mike Hoadley submitted a plan on Jan. 22 to seek a $2.5 million grant for critical improvements at Trout Lake. The proposal will advance once funding is confirmed.  WNEM

HEALTH NEWS

  • During extreme cold, fire officials advise residents to keep space heaters three feet from items (a key safety tip) and unplug them when not in use to avoid fire and carbon monoxide risks. They recommend plugging heaters directly into the wall and having backup shelter if power fails.  WNEM
  • Fire officials say small mistakes with home heating can become big emergencies. They urge residents to inspect their systems and follow safety guidelines to prevent issues.  WNEM
