COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A lane closure is in effect for southbound North Michigan Avenue near Covenant Healthcare Cooper Campus today due to emergency utility work. The hospital confirmed that all campus facilities remain open and advised drivers to allow extra travel time + consider alternative routes.  WNEM
  • Saginaw Community Foundation is accepting grant applications for its board of directors’ Community Improvement Initiative + aimed at supporting local projects; interested groups should apply soon.  WNEM

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Meijer is recalling over 38,000 gallons of steam distilled water with red lids due to a floating black foreign substance — the recall affects products sold in Michigan and five other states and features a sell-by date of Oct. 4.  WNEM
  • Jack’s Fruit & Meat Market in Essexville closed after a Dec. 28 fire will reopen on Tuesday, Feb. 10 as owners updated customers on Facebook and thanked them for their support.  MLive
  • Construction is underway on a new Panera Bread restaurant in Saginaw Township at (4738 State St.). Interior work will be completed by the end of April and the drive-thru building is expected to open early to mid May, creating 25-30 new jobs for the community.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Consumers Energy announced on Feb. 3 that it is offering winter bill assistance to help customers manage higher energy costs. Residents may review program details through the company’s support channels.  ABC 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students can apply online for Saginaw Community Foundation (SCF) general scholarships; applications must be submitted by Feb. 13. The program offers over 255 awards to help local students pursue their education.  WNEM
  • Riley Shoemaker returned to in-person school this week 20 months after he suffered severe burns in a gas canister explosion during an outdoor fire at the 2300 block of Stone Street. His return marks a milestone in his recovery.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local government leaders shared plans at the annual Bay County State of the Community meeting on Feb. 3 in downtown Bay City — projects include a zero-entry community pool opening in June and water safety upgrades with a $5 million state loan.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • After four years with the Great Lakes Bay Regional Alliance, the Mental Health Partnership will now operate under CMU Health where director Dallas Rau will continue her work to expand mental health programming & collaborative care. The move aims to improve access to mental health services across the eight-county region.  MLive
