  • A free laundry day has been organized to ease financial pressure on local families (building community support) by offering an essential service that connects neighbors.  WNEM

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Owner Maria Austin will open The Brunch Guy, a new brunch spot serving eggs Benedict, omelets and baked goods from The Bread Gal in Old Town. The restaurant opens in April at 111 Hamilton St. after flooring improvements (pending final shipments), offering an affordable menu from $5 to about $30.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Sanford Dam Mural team is asking local and regional professional artists to design an 80-foot mural that honors lake restoration after the 2020 dam failures, with semifinalists receiving a $500 stipend and the chosen artist earning a $30,000 commission — applications are due by April 3.  Mid-Michigan NOW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Michigan Public Service Commission approved a $242M annual rate hike for DTE Energy serving 2.3M electric customers in Southeast Michigan and the Thumb, adding to a $217M increase approved last year. Attorney General Dana Nessel criticized the cumulative $1B rate increases since 2020.  ABC 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hemlock Public School District announced a new high school esports team that will compete in nine titles using the PlayVS platform. The initiative aims to help students build teamwork and digital skills to support classroom learning and future STEM paths.  WNEM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy held its 13th Annual Osprey Awards for Conservation Excellence on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m. at The DoubleTree in downtown Bay City — honoring Hemlock Semiconductor, the Kawkawlin River Watershed Association, and Pam Evans and John Engel for their conservation efforts.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new Michigan State Senate bill aims to ban vape sales featuring metal heating elements by requiring glass (or ceramic) ones; if passed by the regulatory committee, a first offense may be penalized with up to 93 days in jail and a $200 fine.  WNEM

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • During Lent, several Saginaw County venues are hosting fish fries on Friday nights. Local groups such as Knights of Columbus in Birch Run, Chesaning, and Saginaw, Zehnder's in Frankenmuth, and St. Joseph Catholic Church offer varied menus with cod, shrimp, and perch (menus and pricing vary by location).  MLive
