CULTURE NEWS

  • SVSU will host its 16th annual 'A Taste of Soul' luncheon on Thursday, Feb. 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Marketplace at Doan near Curtiss Hall, featuring soul food like catfish, black-eyed peas, macaroni and cheese, and peach cobbler (the event costs $13 per person).  MLive
  • Sanford Dam mural project invites muralists nationwide to propose an 80-foot artwork on the dam's powerhouse wall in Midland — commemorating the 2020 dam failures and restoration—with local and regional artists encouraged to apply by April 3; semifinalists earn a $500 stipend and the winning artist gets a $30,000 commission.  MLive

Whitmer announced winners of the 2026 State of the State art and writing contests, and a Bay City student's artwork will appear on the official address program while a Saginaw student was named a runner-up.   • Michigan agencies urge residents to help prevent invasive species during National Invasive Species Awareness Week, running Feb. 23 to 27. They ask locals to clean outdoor gear & report sightings to reduce the spread of harmful species.  WSGW

  • Motorists will face more detours when crews resume the $13 million State Street reconstruction project on Monday, March 9. Crews will update roadways from Avalon Avenue to Bay Street in Saginaw and Saginaw Township until summer.  MLive
  • A recent city council meeting raised tension over Ojibway Island — the community's calming oasis — as officials questioned its use and promised to review current practices for local visitors.  WNEM
