COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Great Lakes Burn Camp hosted its free winter camp near Cheboygan over the second weekend of February, offering children recovering from burn injuries fun activities like ice fishing and dog sledding. The nonprofit will hold a free summer camp in Mattawan from Aug. 2 — 7 with free transportation for eligible children.  WNEM
  • City work continues to turn part of the old fairgrounds into a 1-acre community park with parking and walking trails (lighting, landscaping, and historical signage) funded by rescue funds and grants. The project marks a phase of a mixed-use plan for the remaining 53 acres along the East Genesee corridor.  WNEM
  • Positive Results Downtown Saginaw (PRIDE) is hosting its annual meeting at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12 at The Dow Event Center. The nonprofit will honor local organizations and share development updates from Cassi Zimmerman of City Hall.  MLive
  • Studio 23 in Bay City will host the Saginaw Area Watermedia Artists Exhibition on Thursday, Mar. 5 — local artists will display their work at this community event.  ABC 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Michigan Cream and Sugar Ice Cream Company opened its Bay City and Saginaw locations for the season on Tuesday, March 3rd—boosting its menu to 16 flavors including eight limited-edition options. Store hours will run until Memorial Day weekend.  Mid-Michigan NOW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bay City Fireworks Festival will celebrate America's 250th anniversary from July 1-4 by featuring its largest display yet. The show will launch over 50,000 shells Saturday night between the Uptown River’s Edge building and the Dow building — reviving cherished traditions and live concerts.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation is hosting the 2026 National Civics Bee Regional Competition on April 23 at Saginaw Valley State University. Middle school students from the Great Lakes Bay Region will compete to advance to state contests and vie for a national $100,000 scholarship.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city of Saginaw is asking residents to share their views on Ojibway Island's future vehicular use through a survey open until March 31, while the park stays closed for renovations and safety upgrades.  WNEM
  • After a Jan. 12 public hearing, the city submitted a $2 million EPA cleanup grant application to prepare downtown's Bearinger Building (built in 1893) for future development that may include a daycare and mixed-income housing.  WNEM
  • A federal court issued a temporary restraining order against Custom Creatures Pet Shop (owned by K&M Pets LLC) on Bay Road to let USDA inspectors assess animal health after officials found neglected enclosures. The DOJ said the measure enforces the Animal Welfare Act after the pet store repeatedly denied inspections.  WNEM
  • Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel warns residents about a scam text claiming a civil infraction hearing from Wayne County with a QR code linking to a fake state website & urging use of spam blockers and FTC reports.  WNEM
