ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new report shows Michigan is short about 195,000 affordable housing units for low-income renters, with only 37 units available per 100 households. Gov. Whitmer and lawmakers are considering zoning changes — meant to speed up construction — and a housing tax credit to boost supply.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Flushing Middle School hosted a Special Olympics on Friday, March 6 with over 75 athletes competing in events like sit-ups and push-ups. Seventh and eighth-grade students planned the event to ensure every athlete was included.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • Garber high school students are preparing to perform Shrek the Musical with a preview interview outlining their plans for an upcoming production at their school. The students aim to bring a fresh, fairytale spin to the stage (details on show dates are pending).  WNEM
  • Saginaw United High School seniors will attend prom for free thanks to a grant of ($14,000) by national nonprofit Becca's Closet donated this week; the grant covers admission, photos, and dinner for the class of 2026.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Treasury warned that early tax filers may face four to six week delays on refunds as processing slows amid a 45 percent increase in submissions. Tax returns continue to be accepted until April 15.  MLive
  • Michigan’s DNR will expand its eHarvest system to offer digital kill tags for most game species starting with the 2026 license year instead of mailing paper tags. Hunters who prefer paper tags can still buy them at retail agents, and officials say the change will boost efficiency and support wildlife conservation.  Mid-Michigan NOW
