  • Dr. Samuel Shaheen of Shaheen Development will speak about the ongoing medical diamond project at Saginaw Future Inc.’s 34th Annual Awards Luncheon on Friday, March 13 at Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn Lodge, where 29 local economic development projects are being honored.  MLive
  • Saginaw Children's Zoo euthanized its 34-year-old emu Penelope after hip arthritis made him unable to stand. The zoo said the beloved animal brightened visitor days and left a lasting memory in the community.  ABC 12
  • Bay City commissioner Benjamin Tenney asked for Confederate Railroad to be removed from the festival lineup due to its Confederate imagery, but festival President Earl Bovia said the band remains booked for the July 2 concert—citing an existing contract.  MLive

  • Travel agent John Schmitt said ticket prices remain unchanged by Iran's conflict since summer fares were set months ago. He advised local travelers to check nearby airports + enjoy shorter TSA lines for more affordable options.  WNEM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices swung dramatically yesterday as oil hit $119 per barrel before easing below $100, said oil expert Rey Trevino III—he expects that tapping reserves and potential Russian oil will ease price hikes in coming weeks, though uncertainty remains with tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.  WNEM
  • SVSU economist Dr. Zachary Cohle said the Iran conflict is pushing up gas prices and inflation that may soon affect local households. Gas now averages $3.45 a gallon + a 47-cent jump in one week, which could raise costs for travel and everyday goods.  ABC 12

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teacher Rwaida Bates received the Golden Apple Award at Jesse Loomis Elementary School, honoring her dedication to teaching local students—she celebrated with family, friends and her former teacher Mr. Mott.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • The Essexville-Hampton Public Schools Board of Education appointed James Potts by unanimous vote on Wednesday, March 4. Potts was the sole applicant to fill the vacancy created by Gary Gordon’s death on Feb. 13 and now leads the Robo Alliance Parent Group for the school’s robotics teams.  MLive
  • Melissa Johnson, a Louisiana educator with STEM expertise, is set to lead early childhood programs for Saginaw ISD, overseeing learning for over 2,000 preschoolers. She will begin her new role April 6 at the district office on Barnard Road.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Circuit Judge Manvel Trice discussed his path from law enforcement to the bench and launching the STAR program to help people with alcohol use disorder recover & rebuild their lives in the community. He stressed the need to listen to every person in his courtroom so each citizen feels heard.  MLive
