COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spectrum has awarded $35,000 to First Ward Community Center to support its workforce development program. Over the past three years, Spectrum has given a total of $125,000 (including Chromebooks, a Smartboard and 1-gigabit internet service) to boost local job training and community resources.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • Seven abandoned puppies recovered on Jan. 6 from Bridgeport Township by Saginaw County Animal Care + Control and Bridgeport Township Police received medical care before being adopted into loving homes.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • Visitors gathered at Chippewa Nature Center during the first weekend of spring for Maple Syrup Day and enjoyed a time-honored local tradition. The event brought the community together to sample maple treats and celebrate nature.  WNEM
  • Northwood University will host a community blood drive April 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hach Student Life Center at the Bennett Sports Complex to honor longtime team member Rhonda Sarafolean, and donors are invited to participate.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Saginaw gas stations reported prices rising past $4 a gallon Monday, March 23 due to global shipping tensions, and drivers say budget strains persist while experts warn prices may rise further in spring.  WNEM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Felipe Monasi was named the new executive director of finance at Saginaw ISD on Monday, March 23. He brings corporate, nonprofit and public sector experience to manage a $120 million budget serving 26,000 students.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • MyMichigan Medical Center Midland received a positive verification report from The Joint Commission on its maternity care program after reviewing clinical care, safety procedures, and staff training, which include community support services (childbirth education, lactation guidance, and postnatal support) to benefit local families.  MLive
  • McLaren Bay Region has topped off the steel framework of its Bay West Medical Campus, which will house the emergency department + clinical care spaces.  WNEM
