  • Michigan retailers saw a drop in sales when the 100-point index fell from 62 in January to 41 in February — many businesses said tariffs on Canadian aluminum and steel created uncertainty in pricing and planning long-term projects. Retailers remain hopeful that sales will rise by May as they push for clearer tariff policies.  WNEM

  • A Saginaw parole absconder with over 20 burglary convictions was charged with attempting to break into the Short Stop Depot Market — located at 6055 Tittabawassee Road in Saginaw Township on Dec. 13.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jordan Dice (owner of Midland Mall, St. Laurent Brothers, and the State Theatre) announced his purchase of Saginaw’s Court Street Theater after a judge approved the deal on March 24 (posted on Facebook March 25), and he said he will reopen it later this year.  WNEM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a board meeting on Monday, the STARS board approved cost-saving measures to address a $658,000 budget shortfall by eliminating fixed route service from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and raising fares to $1.50 for the general public, $0.75 for seniors and disabled riders, and $3 for lift passengers—measures that are estimated to save about $800,000. Public comment will be accepted over the coming months before final plans are set in July and the changes go into effect in September.  WSGW
  • The STARS Board approved cost-saving measures to address a $444,000 funding cut by increasing fees and reducing bus services set for September. The agency will hold public hearings this summer — riders can share their feedback at these sessions.  ABC 12
  • At a Monday night meeting, the Saginaw STARS board approved preliminary measures to save costs—raising fares to pre-COVID levels, reducing fixed route service in the evenings, and increasing wellness trip fares—to address a $444,000 state funding drop.
