EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mid-Michigan NOW reporters celebrated National Reading Month by reading stories with preschoolers and elementary students. Courtney Bennett read Llama Llama Red Pajama at Stottlemyer Early Childhood Center, and Stella Daskalakis engaged four classes at Bush Elementary in Essexville on Wednesday, Mar. 25.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • Governor Whitmer announced record enrollment of 55,000 four-year-olds in PreK for All during a visit in Saginaw on March 25—marking a major milestone for the state’s early education program.  WNEM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan lawmakers passed legislation today to extend the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, allowing out-of-state doctors to practice locally and preventing a near-crisis for about 8,000 physicians. Gov. Whitmer must sign the bill by the week’s end (the compact expires March 28).  WNEM
  • On April 22, the Michigan Supreme Court will hold a criminal case hearing at Bay City Central High School with a briefing at 9:30 a.m. and oral arguments at 10 a.m.—students from local high schools and the public can attend as part of a community education initiative.  MLive
  • The House passed the American Water Stewardship Act today to reauthorize funds for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and other water programs through fiscal 2031. The vote of 378-32 showed strong bipartisan support for protecting local waters.  WNEM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Registration is open for the BWell Saginaw Summit 2026 at Temple Theatre downtown on May 1 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The one-day event offers a $100 track for providers and a free community track featuring sessions on Medicaid, mental health, obesity and substance use, plus awards during lunch.  ABC 12

  • The Saginaw Spirit will open their playoff run Friday in Kitchener against the top-seeded Kitchener Rangers+ the team aims to upset the Western Conference leaders.  WNEM
