CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On April 7, a Saginaw man was sentenced for manslaughter—he fatally shot a woman who knocked on his door in 2021. MLive
- ➤ Police in Saginaw are investigating a shooting that left 27-year-old California woman Eliza Vega dead—officers found her body around 4:15 a.m. Saturday morning in a home on the 1400 block of Cypress Street—and no arrests have been made. WSGW
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ After missing its 2024 season, the tall ship Appledore IV (an 85-foot schooner) hired new co-captains, Matthew Tkach and Sydney Bickerstaff, and will have a new engine donated by John Deere installed soon for its 2025 campaign; the ship is still recruiting deckhands and now has a working website for scheduling charters. BaySail, the nonprofit that runs the ship (supported by donations from S C Johnson and Morley Companies), said the season will also offer local school kids a chance to learn about the bay and its ecology. - ➤ Gas prices in Michigan reached a new high for 2025 as Saginaw drivers paid $3.21 per gallon for regular unleaded, AAA-The Auto Club Group said. AAA reported prices increased by 13 cents from last week— and they will likely continue to rise if gasoline stocks drop while oil prices climb. Mid-Michigan NOW

- ➤ Saginaw is accepting applications for its Basic Needs program that offers up to $10,000 for home repair assistance to qualifying homeowners. Applicants must meet income and residency requirements and can apply online from April 7 through April 11 (call 989-759-1207 for special accommodations). WNEM
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ More than 200,000 pounds of liquid egg products from Egg Beaters + Bob Evans Better'n Eggs were recalled after an FSIS tip led to a finding that items produced on March 12th and 13th might be contaminated with a cleaning solution containing sodium hypochlorite. The recalled products have use-by dates of Aug. 9th and Aug. 10th this year and Mar. 7th, 2026, and FSIS said the risk is negligible while advising consumers to dispose of or return them. MLive
- ➤ Today, the Saginaw County Health Department launched a new Community Health Division featuring a Community Resource and Response Room that provides free screenings for body composition, blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol. The room—staffed by nurses and dietitians—operates Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 312 as the department works to address obesity issues. Mid-Michigan NOW
