COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Saginaw hosts free tailgating events at the Dow Event Center parking lot before Michigan Arsenal games. They offer food, live music, a beer tent, games and giveaways on April 25, May 2, May 9, May 16, June 6, and July 18.  MLive
  • The Saginaw County Community Action Committee will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a Diamond Celebration banquet on Saturday, May 16 at Horizons Conference Center. Community leaders, residents and supporters will be honored, with more details on tickets and sponsorships to come.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Discount store Five Below is set to open soon at Bay City Town Center — 4101 E. Wilder Road in Bangor Township, as confirmed by Supervisor Glenn Rowley on Tuesday, Apr. 7. The chain, known for low-priced merchandise, is currently hiring, with no specific opening date announced.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Saginaw Public Schools have begun a project to replace more than 12,000 lights with energy-efficient LED fixtures at schools, three facilities and their administration building, which will be completed in August. The district partners with Ameresco to improve lighting and lower costs.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The National Labor Relations Board dismissed a charge filed by Teamsters Local 332 against Henry Ford Genesys Hospital on Tuesday, saying the hospital provided health insurance information in time. Negotiations continue as talks include a dispute over return work agreements between the union and the hospital + other contract issues.  ABC 12

HEALTH NEWS

  • MyMichigan Health is accepting nonprofit applications for its Corporate Giving Program until June 1. The program funds projects that improve behavioral health, chronic disease prevention, and access to social services across 26 counties, with awards announced the week of July 6.  MLive
  • Covenant Healthcare broke ground on a new outpatient orthopedics facility in Saginaw Township yesterday to expand musculoskeletal care and add Covenant HealthCare OrthoExpress & an urgent care center focused on orthopedics.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • Bay County mosquito control will begin aerial treatments in wooded areas Wednesday and Saginaw County is set to start similar efforts Thursday, weather permitting. The aircraft spread granular insecticide BTI to target larvae without harming people+ animals.  WSGW

  • The high school softball season has begun with top Saginaw-area players from Ithaca, Michigan Lutheran Seminary, Millington and others ready to make an impact—each showing strong hitting and guarding skills from last season. It promises exciting matchups this year.  MLive
  • Bay County Championship games in baseball, softball and girls soccer start Thursday, April 9 with pool matchups at John Glenn and All Saints and finals on Saturday, April 11—continuing a long legacy of champions from previous years.  MLive
