- ➤ A visiting nurse from California, Eliza Vega, was shot to death in a Saginaw home on April 5 — a 30-year-old man is now in custody on a parole violation while children in the home were unharmed. ABC 12
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ On April 12, MLive Media Group photographers won 20 awards in photo and video at the Michigan Press Photographers Association contest held at Wayne State University in Detroit (with six first-place wins). The awards honored work by nearly 50 Michigan photojournalists from images taken in 2024. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ MLive reporters Gus Burns and Cole Waterman won the 2025 Wade H. McCree Advancement of Justice Award for investigating the Michigan State Police Secure Cities Program. They received the honor (awarded on April 13th) at the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame dinner (in East Lansing) after their report revealed over 80 civilian complaints and $27.2 million in settlements. - ➤ The Michigan Attorney General’s Office launched an online form to collect information from residents experiencing Social Security delays and customer service issues (the new form is on the AG’s website), and residents needing help with their claims should contact their local U.S. representative or senator. - ➤ MyMichigan Medical Center is offering free foot screenings for people with diabetes, pre-diabetes or who have numbness or tingling in Saginaw and Tawas this month to mark Foot Health Awareness Month. The screenings will be held on April 24 (1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.) at Towne Centre (4599 Towne Centre Road) and on April 28 (4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.) at the Tawas location (200 Hemlock Road).
