COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Your Voice Your Choice youth event will take place Saturday, April 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Thompson Middle School where local youth can share their ideas.  ABC 12

CRIME NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Transportation warned Saginaw residents that texts asking for toll payments are scams—Michigan does not operate toll roads or request payments via text, so any such message should be deleted.  MLive
  • State police investigators report a shootout that began in Saginaw County on April 15th near the Zilwaukee Bridge ended in Bay County after two vehicles exchanged fire and sparked a chase on M-15 near Youngsditch Road—three men were treated at a local hospital with one released and the others in unknown condition.  WSGW
  • Nearly 580 people convicted of first-degree murder will be re-sentenced after the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that 19- and 20-year-olds cannot be automatically given a life in prison sentence without parole—with 24 cases in Saginaw County among them—and courts will hold extra hearings to review each case.  ABC 12
  • Saginaw County Circuit Judge Darnell Jackson delayed the trial of Ronald L. Kinchen Jr., who is accused of fatally shooting Omar R. Morrow 13 times inside a Family Dollar, until July 15 after accepting new evidence—a medical mask with his DNA—that gave the defense more time to prepare.  MLive
  • Police are finalizing an investigation into the April 5 killing of traveling nurse’s assistant Eliza Vega-Aparicio, who was shot at 4:15 a.m. in a rental house on Cypress St, and they will charge a 30-year-old parolee after Easter—his arraignment is expected to be no sooner than April 21 due to Good Friday court closures.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Temple Theatre in downtown Saginaw—long known for its historic charm—will host a sing-a-long screening of Wicked at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26 where fans may dress as a character from the show. Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Apr 18 and cost $12.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jim Stefanski, a former Saginaw County 911 dispatcher, claims the agency was negligent in the response that led to 23-year-old Nala Wallace's death in July 2021 and says he was fired for raising his concerns about the delay in aid following a shooting. The Michigan Supreme Court has revived his lawsuit after the Court of Appeals dismissed it — and Wallace's family has also filed a civil suit against the county.  ABC 12
