ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Saginaw firefighter rescued a puppy from a burning home (April 18th) when the fire broke out, and the pup was safely removed from the building.  Mid-Michigan NOW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Four business leaders including Bethany Charlton of Covenant, Michael Colby of Isabella Bank, Mitzi Dimitroff of RDS Management, and Mark Wahl of Cobblestone Homes were selected for induction into the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame. The ceremony will occur at 5 p.m. May 1 at the Horizons Conference Center in Saginaw Township + the honorees were recognized for their work in healthcare, banking, management, and home construction sectors.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • On Wednesday, local police arrested a person in Flushing after chasing a vehicle linked to a Tuesday rolling shootout near the Zilwaukee Bridge, where three men suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and were hospitalized—though authorities said it remained unclear if the arrested individual was involved.  WSGW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Frankenmuth will host the 20th annual Bringin’ Back the 80s Festival starting Friday, April 25 with a family-friendly show (6 p.m. to midnight) and a 21+ event on Saturday (5 p.m. to midnight). The festival will feature bands like Sunset Blvd, Jon Fett Quartet and The 1985 and will raise funds for cancer-related causes honoring Jill Zehnder.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Attorney General welcomed its first victim advocate dog Baylee (trained at Leader Dogs for the Blind) on Friday, April 18 to support crime victims during court and in meetings with victim advocates. The dog was assigned to the Victim Rights Division and her presence (a comfort measure for stressed victims) is expected to help reduce tension during legal proceedings.  WNEM

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 2024 CHL Memorial Cup in the Great Lakes Bay Region was named Event of the Year by Sports ETA for destinations under 500,000, marking the first Memorial Cup held in the United States in 26 years. The event hosted by Go Great Lakes Bay — in partnership with the Saginaw Spirit — generated $40 million in economic impact, over $500,000 in media value and led to $1 million in Saginaw accessibility improvements.  WSGW
  • Heritage junior Breeghan Hamilton earned MLive Saginaw Athlete of the Week honors—she led her girls lacrosse team to a 4-1 record with key goals and assists against East Lansing and Lansing Catholic. Coach Sophie Kostrzewa-Straebel praised Hamilton’s work ethic and noted she can play at a college level despite only starting lacrosse as a freshman.  MLive
  • Former Chesaning ace Tyler Sager threw a complete-game no-hitter for Northwood against Lake Erie, earning Great Midwest Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week and Division II National Pitcher of the Week honors. He struck out seven and walked three during the 11 to 0 win, marking Northwood’s first complete no-hitter since 2019 (he is the first pitcher honored nationally since Max Bain).  MLive
