  • On Friday, the Saginaw Zoo opened for the season and unveiled two baby penguins, Eggs Benedict + Quiche, born to parents Blake and Melody just before Christmas. The chicks support the Species Survival Plan for African penguins and boost key conservation efforts+ the zoo invites visitors to learn about protecting the species.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • On Friday evening, a spaghetti dinner fundraiser was held at Sips 476 in Saginaw Township to raise money for Alejandro Gonzales’s family after he died saving a friend from a rip current in Cancun. The event drew a heavy crowd and featured a 50/50 raffle to help with funeral costs and transporting his remains — a clear sign of strong community support.  WNEM
  • Roy and Evelyn Baldwin opened Baldwin’s Smokehouse BBQ at 3316 East Holland Road after renovating an empty building that had suffered a fire in June 2023— the husband-and-wife pastors serve Southern favorites made from scratch and aim to support local employment and community change. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Thursday through Sunday.  MLive

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire destroyed the shuttered Candlelite Bowling and Banquet Center (6817 Dixie Highway in Bridgeport Township) early Saturday, April 26, and firefighters were still working to control the blaze while the cause remains unknown.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Consumers Energy is offering a $70 rebate for each qualifying refrigerator or freezer and a $15 rebate for room air conditioners and dehumidifiers with free pickup available until April 30th; appliances must be working and measure between 10 and 30 cubic feet. Each household may recycle up to two units plus the program has already recycled over 330,000 appliances since it began in 2009, helping lower energy bills by replacing older, less efficient models.  WSGW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Whitmer launched the Ticket to Tuition sweepstakes last week to help Michigan students fill out the FAFSA and access more financial aid; over 9,000 students have already entered. Eligible students can enter until May 16th at 11:59 p.m.—winners drawn on May 21st will have funds deposited into a Michigan Education Savings Program account for school expenses.  MLive

  • Three top Saginaw Spirit draft picks—Ryan Hanrahan, Drew Roscoe and Levi Harper—signed with the team on Friday after a new NCAA rule let players keep college eligibility while playing in the OHL. Team officials said the rule change eased recruitment concerns and helped strengthen their draft strategy.  MLive
