  • Panera opened its second location on State Street in Saginaw on Wed., Apr. 29.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Pit and Balcony Theatre in Saginaw will stage 'The Last Five Years'—a musical with a rotating cast including Spencer Beyerlein, Danessa Hellus, Erica Close and Matthew Howe—from May 7 to 9 and May 15 to 17, with shows at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday and a Sunday matinee at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $20 at 805 N. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly 800 students will receive their degrees at SVSU’s Ryder Center on Saturday, May 2, with ceremonies at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Ontario Premier Douglas Ford will speak and receive an honorary degree during the morning session + both events will be available via livestream.  MLive

FINANCE NEWS

  • A Saginaw lottery player won $1M with a scratch-off ticket from the Epic Wild Time game purchased at an Express Stop gas station and later claimed the prize at Michigan Lottery headquarters in Lansing. Two more $1M winning tickets remain in circulation.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Saginaw City Council approved language to rename Weadock Park after former educator Kevin Rooker (school board member) and the proposal now awaits a second vote at the council meeting on May 18.  ABC 12
  • A bipartisan bill passed that requires infant-formula manufacturers to test products, share positive results with the FDA, and consult on disposing of contaminated supplies. The legislation aims to reduce shortages + contamination risks following a past recall.  WNEM
  • The Saginaw Water Tower is filled and undergoing disinfection as officials prepare it for reopening today. Gas prices in Mid-Michigan are nearing $5 a gallon — putting pressure on local drivers.  WNEM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Thompson Middle School will host a free Latino Health and Resource Fair for families on Saturday, May 9 from noon to 3:30 p.m. The event will offer free screenings, educational sessions on end-of-life planning and doula services (with sessions at 1:45, 2:15 and 2:45 p.m.) plus snacks and yoga.  MLive
  • A mosquito expert warns that heavy spring rains have filled the soil with water, which will lead to more biting insects within days. He urges residents to remove any standing water from their yards to help control the outbreak.  MLive

  • Nic Haas delivered a walk-off hit for Freeland in a 6-5 win Tuesday over Bay City John Glenn — marking his second game-winning hit in as many weeks as Freeland also won a 7-2 nightcap in the Tri-Valley Conference.  MLive
