COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On April 16, Saginaw County Animal Control rescued more than 65 rabbits from a local resident’s home where pet breeding got out of hand—rabbits chewed through drywall and many suffered injuries. Five rabbits were euthanized and the remaining animals are being treated before they will be spayed, neutered, and made available for adoption with approved shelters. MLive
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 41-year-old man died and a 66-year-old man was injured in a shooting on Wednesday night (around 6:11 p.m.) on the 1300 block of S. Michigan (no arrests have been made) as Saginaw police investigate the case. Mid-Michigan NOW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State Rep. Brian BeGole introduced a bill that would let police use a saliva swab to test drivers for drugs—if passed, the handheld screening machine would return results in five minutes and help remove impaired drivers from the road. WNEM
- ➤ Effective May 7, Michigan travelers will need a Real ID compliant driver's license to fly and enter federal facilities—if they do not meet this requirement, a passport may be used instead. Secretary of State Benson advised residents not to worry and urged them to get their Real IDs soon. Mid-Michigan NOW
- ➤ Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson held a driver’s license restoration clinic on April 30th at the SVRC Marketplace in Saginaw to help drivers overcome fines, fees and red tape—participants received printed guidance on reactivating their licenses while she also discussed repealing the three-year driving penalty law. - ➤ A bill called Canjo’s Law has been introduced in the state House to allow emergency ambulance transport for retired K-9 officers to a veterinary clinic if needed—handlers will pay the cost without using taxpayer funds. A House committee hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. today in Lansing—supporters say the measure, honoring the late K-9 officer Canjo, will help provide urgent care for retired police dogs. WNEM
