COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Saginaw will host a Cinco de Mayo parade in a bigger and more diverse celebration this weekend, beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Hoyt Park and ending at the Dow Event Center. The parade features colorful floats, low-riders, music, food trucks and traditional dancers — marking the 80th anniversary of La Unión Cívica Mexicana — to bring the community together.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • On Wednesday, the Saginaw County Animal Care and Control Center held a grand opening for its new surgical center with a ribbon cutting+ the facility will offer services such as microchipping, vaccines, spay and neuters and plans to add dental surgeries, TNR for cats, and community outreach along with a 'Spay It Forward' fund to help pet owners.  ABC 12

CRIME NEWS

  • Police responded to a shooting on the 1300 block of South Michigan Avenue at 6:10 p.m. yesterday where they found two gunshot victims—41-year-old Michael Wayne Carroll was pronounced dead at the hospital while a 66-year-old man received non-life-threatening treatment—and no arrests have been made as the Saginaw Major Crimes Unit continues its investigation.  WSGW
  • A 21-year-old man was charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm after he stabbed his brother at a Hampton Township home on the 1800 block of Carol Drive at 8:40 p.m. on Sunday—he returned covered in blood with a makeshift tourniquet after his mother told him to leave while the victim was preparing food, and his court date is set for May 13.  WSGW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Applewood Estate, a Michigan Historic Landmark — opened its season on May 1 and now offers free programming year-round for local residents.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers proposed a bill to standardize school safety training so that school staff can work better during an emergency. The measure, which passed a House committee on Wednesday, would have training developed by the Department of Education, State Police, and Attorney General’s Office — a plan modeled on successful local practices.  WNEM
  • A state House committee held a hearing on Canjo’s Law on May 1 at 9:30 a.m.—a bill introduced by State Representative Mike Hoadley—and discussed changing rules so that retired police dogs can receive the same medical transport as active units. The law is named for retired Saginaw PD K9 Canjo—who experienced informal transport after his service—and aims to improve care for retired K9s.  WSGW
