COMMUNITY NEWS

  • St. Hyacinth Church in Bay City will hold its final mass on May 27 and close its doors on May 28— the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw said declining membership and a $1.1 million debt led to the decision. The diocese scheduled the closing mass to give the community a chance to say goodbye.  WNEM
  • Saginaw Fire Department Capt. Chedrick A. Greene—retired Marine with 30 years of service—will serve as grand marshal for the Memorial Day Parade scheduled for May 26 at 11 a.m., with the parade beginning at Federal and South Washington and ending at the Saginaw County Veterans Memorial Plaza before a noon ceremony; veterans groups, marching bands and schools are encouraged to participate.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Prosecutors are reviewing the fatal shooting of 33-year-old Corin M. Skinner—shot by Saginaw officers on March 30 after responding to a 911 call reporting he was armed and threatening suicide—while the three officers have returned to active duty.  MLive
  • Inmate Aaron M. Wyse admitted on May 5 that he drove an SUV with Heidi Dowd’s body and bought gasoline used to burn her remains behind an abandoned Bay County schoolhouse—he said he did not shoot her—and his sentencing is set for June 16 while he continues serving time.  MLive
  • A Bay County man was sentenced to 20 to 30 years in prison for stabbing his ex-wife nearly 30 times at an Auburn gas station and crashing his truck into an Uptown Bay City townhome—he had already served 815 days and the judge called him a dangerous individual.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Saginaw residents saw an early preview of the proposed 2025-26 fiscal year budget at City Hall on May 5+ Yolanda Bland presented an overview as part of the annual process. Four newly elected council members will join the budget process for the first time at a council meeting scheduled on May 19.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA announced that tomatoes sold at Gordon Food Service in Michigan and 10 other states have been recalled due to a possible Salmonella risk. The recall was issued by Ray & Mascari Inc. after Hanshaw & Capling Farms reported potential contamination, and affected customers have been advised to discard the product while no illnesses have been reported.  MLive
  • Gov. Whitmer signed two bills on Monday that require doctors to test Michigan children at 12 and 24 months for lead and record the results on immunization records—families may opt out of the testing. The law aims to catch early signs of lead poisoning so that any hazards in the home can be identified and managed quickly.  Mid-Michigan NOW
