CRIME NEWS

  • On March 30, three Saginaw Police officers answered two 911 calls about a man with a knife who did not follow orders and charged toward an officer, so two officers shot him and the prosecutor ruled the shooting justified.  WNEM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Frankenmuth Heritage Park will host the 2025 World Expo of Beer where over 50 drink vendors from Michigan and abroad will offer beers, ciders and more on May 16 from 5 to 10 p.m. and May 17 from 2 to 10 p.m.—food stands, merchant booths and award contests will also be part of the event with all proceeds aiding local charities.  MLive
  • Three local figures and one initiative were honored with the 2025 All Area Arts Awards for their lasting impact on the Great Lakes Bay Region's culture. Jeanne Conger was recognized for her leadership in major Saginaw events, Christian Reer for his 30-year career as an art educator, and Ken Wuepper for over 70 years in the performing arts—while the Public Art Passport was noted for its digital mapping of more than 300 public art pieces.  WSGW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State Rep. Donni Steele introduced House Bill 4477 to require Michigan schools to develop a water safety education program that teaches flotation devices, supervision, and swimming techniques. The bill has been referred to the Committee on Education and Workforce and awaits a hearing as Steele calls for bipartisan support.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials launched a corridor study to assess transportation needs along a 5-mile stretch of M-13 (Washington Avenue and Veterans Memorial Parkway) in Saginaw and Buena Vista Township. MDOT will accept public feedback online and at an open house (4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on June 4 at SVRC Marketplace, 203 S. Washington).  MLive
  • Marquette County officials said on Tuesday that Dr. David L. Stockman withheld 22 autopsy reports needed for death certificates so families can receive life insurance and benefits—county leaders have terminated his contract and are urging the state to revoke his medical license if the reports are not promptly released. Officials added that repeated calls to Stockman have failed to secure the reports, leaving families without the necessary documents.  MLive
  • City officials in Saginaw said state grants will fund the $12 million Riverfront Park design part of the larger Medical Diamond project—work will ramp up in 2026 and finish by 2027 with improvements like extra trails, a pier and more fishing access.  WNEM
