  • Flushing's famed smiling water tower will be dismantled piece by piece starting May 26 due to high repair costs and safety concerns — its removal will make way for a new AT&T cell tower to boost service and lease revenue.  WNEM
  • Retired reverend Eddie Williams, nearing 103 on May 20, urges everyone in Saginaw to practice kindness and help others as he reflects on decades of service at General Motors and local churches plus cherishing family life; he remains active and is cared for by his son Willie and wife Minnie.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jake Slater, a two-time Saginaw King Fest winner, will perform an Elvis tribute on May 15 at 7 p.m. in the Jolt Celebration Club at Dow Event Center downtown. Presented by the Saginaw County Police Chief Association, the show features hits from three decades and general admission costs $39.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congressmen John Moolenaar and Debbie Dingell introduced a bipartisan bill to ban Chinese-linked vehicles, as well as those from Russia, North Korea and Iran, to protect Michigan's auto jobs + national security. Gov. Whitmer supports the measure, noting that the state's industry is key to local workforce stability.  ABC 12
  • The Saginaw Exchange Club honored eight local law enforcement officers at its annual awards luncheon on Tuesday, May 12, recognizing their dedication after nominations by department command officers.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • Federal, state and local personnel began joint preliminary damage assessments for March flooding and tornadoes in Saginaw, Roscommon and Iosco counties — the review of damage to homes and businesses will guide Gov. Whitmer's decision on a federal disaster declaration.  WNEM
  • The Michigan DNR announced a fee increase for snowmobile trail permits from $52 to $65 for the next five years, with permits going on sale Sept. 1 and funding grooming and maintenance for more than 6,300 miles of trails + supporting local club operations.  Mid-Michigan NOW

  • On Monday, May 11, Freeland split a doubleheader with Frankenmuth in TVC baseball as Freeland won Game 2 7-5 to boost its record to 8-2 while Frankenmuth fell to 7-3, keeping TVC title hopes alive.  MLive
  • After extra walks and errors, the Tigers lost 10-2 to the Mets at Citi Field on Tuesday night. The team will face the Mets again today at 7:10 p.m. with left-hander Framber Valdez returning from suspension.  MLive
