  • On May 21, the City of Saginaw began plans to clean up the old County Fairgrounds with federal funds to create a new public park for future development. The Census Bureau reported that Flint grew by 76 residents—lawmakers held a meeting on a federal budget bill and state senators considered free PFAS testing for children—while Kearsley Community Schools hosted the open house for their new recreation center.  WNEM
  • Hidden Harvest in Saginaw is planning its annual fundraiser, Celebrating Good Tastes, on Wednesday, June 4 at Dow Diamond in Midland to support its food rescue work. The non-profit rescued 3.7 million pounds of food last year—working with nearly 200 agencies and local food providers—and the event will help fund growing community needs.  Mid-Michigan NOW

CRIME NEWS

  • Saginaw Township Police reintroduced its Lock It or Lose It campaign to help residents prevent car theft by urging them to remove valuables, lock their vehicles, and report suspicious behavior—this year thefts dropped to seven compared to 25 in the same period last year.  WNEM
  • Police in Saginaw investigated pipe bombs found Monday in an abandoned truck on the west side after K9 Loki detected explosives and Officer Wortman contacted the MSP bomb squad—who confirmed, deactivated, and destroyed the live devices—as a joint investigation with ATF continues.  WSGW
  • Former Saginaw police sergeant Ian Wenger pleaded guilty to third-degree retail fraud and was sentenced to 15 days in jail for using a department label maker to create bar codes for discounted groceries at a Midland Walmart — he must also pay around $1,200 in fines and court costs.  ABC 12

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • STARS is asking local riders for input on its plan to raise the regular fare from $1 to $1.50 and shorten weekday service hours from 9 p.m. to 8 p.m.—a public hearing is set for Tuesday, June 10 at 6 p.m. in the STARS Board Room, and the proposals will be reviewed before changes go into effect on Oct. 1.  WNEM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials warn residents that tick bites are a growing risk as Lyme disease cases jumped 168% with 1,215 cases (up from 452 in 2020) and anaplasmosis nearly quintupled with 82 cases (up from 17 in 2020) due to the expanding range of the blacklegged tick. They advise using repellent, avoiding tick areas and checking for ticks after outdoor activities to spot symptoms early.  ABC 12
