COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This Memorial Day weekend, community events are set across mid-Michigan as residents can enjoy the free Frankenmuth Dog Bowl at Frankenmuth River Place Shops on May 24-25, Burton Rock and Blues Fest on Saturday at Burton Eagles Club headlined by Larry McCray, and Port Huron’s Blessing of the Boats from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.; also, Saginaw’s Urban Air Adventure Park holds a sensory-friendly play session on Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon and Midland’s Chippewa Nature Center hosts free birdwatching hikes for all ages — drawing locals to celebrate and connect.  MLive
  • An EF-0 tornado hit St. Charles on May 16 near Dempsey Road, uprooting trees and damaging homes while over 50 firefighters cleared debris and downed wires. Local police, neighborhood businesses, and community members helped in the cleanup and officials have rescheduled Beautification Day for today.  MLive

  • Fishbeck announced its new Saginaw Township office—4805 Towne Center Road—that offers water system design, roadway engineering, and environmental consultation services to mid-Michigan communities. The expansion adds to its Midwest network and is expected to strengthen partnerships with local municipalities and developers.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Devante R. Thomas, a Saginaw man who drove his gray Mazda CX-5 at 92 mph on northbound I-75 near Birch Run on May 5, pleaded guilty to possessing nearly 10 pounds of methamphetamine—he now faces a mandatory sentence of 15 years that may extend to life.  MLive
  • A Bay City woman, Jessica Burke, was held in Bay County Jail on a $250,000 bond after she was arrested last week and accused of first-degree child abuse for allegedly starving her four-year-old son to death on October 18th when he weighed only ten pounds and needed a feeding tube, and her next court date is May 29.  WSGW
  • Essexville man Damian M. Leske, 22, pleaded guilty on May 19 to attempted armed robbery at Pet Supplies Plus in Hampton Township when he left the store with nearly $400 in pet food and threatened an employee with an airsoft gun—he is set to be sentenced on June 30.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan lawmakers introduced bipartisan Taylor Swift bills to target ticket bots that buy many tickets in seconds+ raising prices for fans. The House Judiciary Committee heard testimony on the measure as StubHub backed efforts to offer fair ticket access.  WNEM
  • On May 22, Genesee County officials recounted primary results for a vacant Council seat left open after Councilman Quincy Murphy’s death; A.C. Dumas and Beverly Biggs-Leavy each received 165 votes — Lashawn Johnson got 162, and the top two candidates will move to the general election in August. Health leaders warned residents to guard against ticks, Governor Whitmer aims to build a semiconductor facility by the end of her term, Saginaw Township police advised locking vehicles to prevent theft, and STARS will hold a public hearing on June 10 at 6 p.m. for feedback on proposed fare hikes and service cuts.  WNEM
  • Today at 3 p.m., MDOT will suspend work and ease lane closures on 93 of 158 projects ahead of Memorial Day weekend; restrictions will resume at 6 a.m. Tuesday—AAA estimates 1.3 million Michigan residents will travel at least 50 miles from home. Travelers are advised to allow extra time for changing road conditions.  MLive
