This effort comes as STARS works to balance rising costs and reduced state funds.

Brandon Hillaker, a Delta College student, will begin the Tri for Hope in late July—a four-day, 400-mile journey from Hell to Paradise designed to raise funds and awareness for the Barb Smith Suicide Resource and Response Network; he will bike 330 miles from Hell to Mackinaw City, swim five miles, and run 65 miles to Paradise.

Freeland senior TJ Hansen broke the 4-minute mile barrier with a time of 3 minutes, 59.02 seconds at the RunningLane Track Championships in Huntsville, Alabama — he became just the third Michigan high school runner to do so and said he had worked toward the record since age 7.
