COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Saginaw officials will host Swimming Day on Sunday, May 31 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the YMCA as part of the free Family Play Dates in the Park series—additional events in June and August include fishing, home gardening, tennis and skateboarding. Registration is required.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dunham’s Sports will open a new store soon in Saginaw Township's Fashion Square Mall + job interviews have begun for the renovated former food court space. Once open it will be the only Dunham’s location in the county after the Bay Road store closed last year.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Golden Girls: The Laughs Continue is a new parody production with twists such as a DEA bust and a senior dating app that will play at The Dow Event Center’s Applied Innovation Theatre on Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. General ticket sales start today at 10 a.m. at the box office or online.  MLive
  • The Temple Theatre in downtown Saginaw will screen the film Jaws on May 31 at 2 p.m. as part of its Saginaw Silver Screen series at 201 N. Washington Ave, and $13 tickets can be purchased online.  MLive
  • Applied Innovation and the Saginaw Spirit unveiled the new Applied Innovation Theater at the Dow Event Center (a 2,200-seat venue downtown) today as part of an expanded partnership that supports community performing arts and events in Riverfront Saginaw.  WSGW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Whitmer signed an executive order today to form the Every Child Reads Champions Council made up of 16 leaders from education + business, government and community; the council will track state literacy progress with appointments announced in August and meetings starting in the new school year.  ABC 12
  • The Gray Matter Hemlock robotics team won an award on May 28 at a local robotics competition. The win underscores the team’s technical skills and teamwork as they continue to build on their program.  ABC 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tigers hitters Carpenter and Torres, recovering from a left shoulder sprain and an oblique strain, were close to rehab assignments as Carpenter practiced live Wednesday and may have headed to Triple-A Toledo on Thursday + Torres planned for cage work Thursday that could lead to his return.  MLive
  • At Ubly Heights Golf Course, Nouvel Catholic Central won the Division 4 boys golf regional title on Wednesday with 332 strokes, led by Ty Iamurri's 80. Earlier, Freeland edged Swan Valley 5-3 in a girls soccer playoff at Roberts Park.  MLive
