CRIME NEWS

  • A Saginaw grandmother serving a life sentence for the 1986 killing of a bank examiner in Flint testified on May 29 via a virtual hearing with the Michigan Parole Board that she acted in self defense during a sex-for-money deal gone wrong—she said the man grabbed her—and she is asking Gov. Whitmer to commute her sentence.  MLive
  • On Wednesday, a 30-year-old Saginaw man, Anthony Rendon, pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated distribution of child sexually abusive material after police arrested him on November 27 following an alert from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children— his sentencing is pending.  WSGW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Don Carlyon, Delta College's longest-serving president who led the school from 1967 to 1992, passed away Monday at 100. He helped grow the student body from 1,600 to over 14,000 (he also held several other roles) throughout his long career.  WSGW

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service in Detroit confirmed an EF—0 tornado touched down near Layton Corners on May 16th, lasting three minutes and damaging barns, garages, and trees.  WNEM
  • Wildfire smoke from burning fires in Central Canada will drift into Michigan today, causing hazy skies and moderate air quality that may affect sensitive groups. Forecasts predict rain showers later that could mix with ash to leave a film on vehicles and outdoor items — the smoke is expected to clear by the weekend.  Mid-Michigan NOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials in Saginaw are negotiating with Dow Chemical Co. to renew the naming rights for the Dow Event Center, which has borne Dow's name since 2004. Craig Goslin said the county—Saginaw Spirit and ASM Global—will work together to set up a new deal when the current contract ends this September.  MLive

  • FSIS says Hormel Foods has recalled 20-ounce cans of Dinty Moore Beef Stew after three consumer complaints reported pieces of wood in the cans — consumers should return or discard products marked 'BEST BY FEB 2028' and lot code T02045 as no injuries have been reported.  WNEM
  • Henry Ford Genesys Health talked about water safety with local residents on May 29th and explained ways to prevent drowning and other water accidents—its aquatics department also offers swim classes to teach safe practices.  ABC 12
