- ➤ Saginaw Bay Community Sailing Association is hosting a free try sail event on Saturday, June 14 at the Riverside Art Festival from 1 to 4 p.m.—Participants can learn basic sailing skills at no charge. ABC 12

- ➤ The Hooters chain, which filed for Chapter 11 earlier this year, closed over 30 company-owned restaurants in multiple states — in Michigan, the Flint and Taylor locations are shut while only the Saginaw location remains open. MLive
- ➤ Mike Perry said his Old Town Furniture store at 418 Hancock will hold its final sale and close by early July after 46 years, as the 1870s building will be turned into condos. The historic shop has furnished homes for nearly a century and now offers items at 20 percent to 40 percent off—unsold furniture will be moved to another location. MLive
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Saginaw man pleaded guilty in federal court on April 17 to possessing an illegal machine gun — he remains charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder after he allegedly used the weapon in a shooting that targeted two teens in Saginaw. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Michigan paused Job Corps programs in Grand Rapids, Flint and Detroit, affecting 700 students and hundreds of jobs. The Department of Labor said the phased pause—finalized by June 30—is due to financial challenges and aims to help students find new training and housing. MLive
- ➤ On June 5, Saginaw United High School held its first graduation at the Temple Theatre where 245 seniors received diplomas—marking the historic transition from Arthur Hill and Saginaw High to a new educational future. MLive
- ➤ Michigan lawmakers passed House Bill 4285 on Wednesday to allow high schools to offer an elective course in firearm and hunter safety that covers firearm usage—handling, maintenance and safe hunting practices. The bill now heads to the Michigan Senate and, if approved and signed by the governor, schools will begin offering the course this fall. ABC 12

- ➤ The Saginaw County Mosquito Abatement Commission detected West Nile virus in a dead crow found in central Saginaw County in May. The commission said it will increase surveillance and control efforts during the summer + residents are urged to wear long sleeves, use DEET repellent, and remove standing water to prevent mosquito bites.
