  • Saginaw is celebrating summer today at the Lucille Andersen Memorial Garden with the Art and Garden Festival, which features art booths, gardening demos on caring for roses, a silent auction, food truck lunch and a famous homemade strawberry shortcake. Attendees are advised to approach via Fordney Avenue—road construction is causing delays.  Mid-Michigan NOW

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Bay County Sheriff’s deputies rescued two men from their sinking pontoon boat in Saginaw Bay on June 7—one man, a quadriplegic in a wheelchair—and took them to a Bangor Township boat launch where they received medical care.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • A Saginaw woman, identified as Nicole L. Woods, robbed a Dollar General in Buena Vista Township by threatening store staff with a butcher knife on June 7 and stealing $91.65 in merchandise—she was later arrested, arraigned, and had her bond set at $25,000 with a preliminary examination scheduled for June 27.  MLive
  • Michigan State Police arrested a man on felony charges Wednesday on Wadsworth Avenue between 7th and 8th Streets — the suspect barricaded himself in a home before surrendering peacefully with no injuries reported.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • The 70th District Court in Saginaw County warned residents that text messages claiming they owe fines for tickets are scams—if you receive such a message, do not click on any links and call the court to check your ticket status.  WSGW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Three SVSU contestants—Ashley Cetnarowski, Maddison Hubbert, and Samantha Pickelman—are among 22 women competing in the Miss Michigan pageant for scholarships and a chance to represent Michigan in Miss America; the contest runs today through June 14 in Muskegon.  WNEM

  • Residents and local leaders met at Beacon of Hope Church to discuss road work, parking rules+ and upcoming community events. City Engineer Travis Hare explained project progress and how streets are chosen for repair+ while Chief Robert Ruth reviewed new parking guidelines.  Mid-Michigan NOW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local service members are hosting a Veteran and First Responder Suicide Awareness Walk on Saturday, June 14—starting at Hemlock VFW Post 7302 and ending at Alma VFW over 22 miles to honor the 22 veterans lost to suicide each day. Specialist Cooper Schirmer and Staff Sergeant Sara-Ann Mutter shared their personal challenges in transitioning to civilian life to encourage asking for help.  ABC 12

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Local Saginaw officials approved the sale of the 130-year-old Bearinger Fireproof Building at 126 N. Franklin to River Caddis Communities, which will add retail space and the building’s first residential units. The six-story landmark has been in limbo for 17 years—its new mixed-use plan signals a fresh start for this historic structure.  MLive
