EDUCATION NEWS

  • Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet requested federal funding to support Hemlock Public Schools, Flint Community Schools and the Help Community Violence Intervention Program in Saginaw—she seeks more than $1 million to expand Hemlock's Early Childhood Center, over $2 million to renovate Flint Community Schools' Central campus and $700,000 for the violence prevention program.  Mid-Michigan NOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials warned motorists that the traffic lights at South Michigan Avenue and Fraser Street as well as South Michigan Avenue and Vermont Street were placed in flash mode last week and will be replaced with stop signs in September—signals are removed at both intersections to streamline traffic. The changes affect areas located about a half-mile southwest of Old Town—providing an initial step in upcoming traffic modifications.  MLive
  • Bangor Township will demolish the old Michigan State Police post on Euclid Avenue later this week and may repurpose the site for a new fire station—Supervisor Glenn Rowley said the plan would put fire trucks closer to local apartment complexes if the community approves a millage or bond vote.  WNEM
  • A law firm is asking Gov. Whitmer and state lawmakers to fix MSP training gaps — seven troopers said they never received training on proper flare placement during the trial for Trooper Joel Popp’s death on January 24 while responding to an emergency on I-75 near Birch Run. Attorney Mike Manley sent letters to the officials — he pressed for new training standards to help keep troopers safe in the future.  ABC 12

SPORTS NEWS

  • Starting next month, Hoyt Park will host major men’s softball championships as part of a new partnership between Friends of Hoyt Park and USA Softball of Michigan—tournaments include Men’s Modified Pitch and Men’s 35 & Over Slow Pitch on July 12-13 and Men’s Fast Pitch on July 25-27. Organizers plan to use the events to boost community activity and build a long-term venue for future competitions.  WNEM
