COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Organizers say that Saginaw’s July 4 fireworks will feature a $150,000 display and traditions like a flag raising at 10 a.m. and an 8:30 p.m. flyover—although Ojibway Island construction will limit parking and cancel the skydiving show. Volunteers are invited today at 10 a.m.—helping prepare for over 125,000 expected attendees to enjoy the event.  MLive
  • Mary Free Bed at Covenant held a free adaptive sports clinic at Haithco Park in Saginaw, letting community members with disabilities try kayaking for free—recreational therapist Carlie Provow said the clinic filled a needed gap and more events will be held this summer, with the next one scheduled for August 15.  ABC 12

CRIME NEWS

  • A hostage situation unfolded Friday evening at the Mercantile Bank branch at 5444 State St. in Saginaw Township when a gunman held at least one hostage—officers from local, state and federal agencies arrived to negotiate a peaceful resolution.  ABC 12
  • A Saginaw man, Michael L. Johnson, was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison on June 26 by U.S. District Judge Janet V. Parker for keeping his girlfriend captive and repeatedly assaulting her in a second trial following an appeal—he faced charges including unlawful imprisonment, strangulation, suffocation, interstate domestic violence, and witness tampering.  MLive
  • Saginaw City Councilwoman Monique Lamar-Silvia—who remains on the nine-member council—was convicted on four charges including two felonies for forging signatures to help candidate Eric Eggleston join the ballot last year, and both remain free on bond as Lamar-Silvia awaits sentencing on Aug. 20.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, June 27, the Saginaw County Mosquito Abatement Commission opened its new facility on North Towerline Road in Buena Vista Township with a ribbon cutting and open house that allowed visitors to tour operations and equipment. Director William Stanuszek said the facility meets their needs for decades — it was completed $500,000 under budget.  WNEM

  • Saginaw Spirit captain Michael Misa (a top 2025 NHL Draft prospect) was selected second overall by the San Jose Sharks. He becomes the highest drafted player from Saginaw ever after a season that saw him set a franchise record with 134 points.  WNEM
