  • Frank N. Anderson Park’s splash park reopened after equipment repairs were completed on July 3rd—now it operates daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the summer for family recreation.  WNEM
  • Michigan law allows fireworks until July 5 from 11 a.m. to 11:45 p.m.—first-time users should keep water nearby, place fireworks on the ground, and move 150 feet away once lit. Mark Lee II from Phantom Fireworks and Michigan State Police urge adult supervision to prevent injuries, especially among children.  WNEM
  • In honor of Independence Day today, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation paid off the home mortgage for the family of fallen trooper Joel Popp, and his wife said the payment will help keep their daughter in her school district and provide a safe home for her foster children (a portion of I-75 is dedicated as a memorial to his service).  WSGW

CRIME NEWS

  • A Saginaw man with 43 prior convictions (including a 2003 fatal shooting) was arrested on a murder charge on July 1 after a judge dismissed a separate case, and he is accused of killing Demetrious A. 'Meak' Robinson at The Pole Barn in Buena Vista Township.  MLive
  • Police say Detroit man Quinton Allen—who left a probation program and allegedly broke into several local businesses—was killed during a botched robbery that turned into a hostage situation at the Mercantile branch in Saginaw Township.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of State reported record turnout in the 2024 presidential election with 5,706,503 votes cast, including over 60 percent by early or mail voting and more than 820,000 first-time voters after Proposal 2022-2—county turnout ranged from Lapeer County's 81.5% to Clare County's 73.1%.  WNEM
