- ➤ K9 Ares retired from the Saginaw Police Department K9 Unit after more than four years of service— a new K9 will join the unit in the coming months. Mid-Michigan NOW

- ➤ An electrical issue sparked a fire at Old Town Furniture and Mattress Co. on Saturday, July 12 at 7:27 p.m.—firefighters quickly put out the blaze and evacuated nearby apartments after the incident caused about $120,000 in damage without any injuries. MLive
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Anthony D. (Birdie) Rendon, a 30-year-old Saginaw artist who pleaded guilty in May to two counts of aggravated distribution of child sexually abusive material, appeared in court on July 14 and was sentenced to prison as prosecutors dismissed six related counts plus two counts of drug possession. - ➤ Police are searching for a masked suspect who robbed Bangor Township’s Independent Bank on North Euclid Avenue on Monday, July 14 at 12:23 p.m. as he fled toward a nearby strip mall wearing black pants, a gray hooded sweatshirt and a black face mask, with investigators using drones + K9 units and reviewing surveillance footage. - ➤ Bay City man 27-year-old Zachary J. Wittkopp began serving his prison sentence on July 11—transferred from Saginaw County Jail to the Charles E. Egeler Reception and Guidance Center—after being convicted of allegedly sexually abusing a dog in December 2023, with Saginaw County Circuit Judge Darnell Jackson sentencing him to two terms of five to 10 years and one term of 23 months to 15 years in June. - ➤ Due to construction on Ojibway Island, the Saginaw Art Fair has moved its venue to Celebration Park on Fordney Street. The fair will run from Friday, August 8th at 10 a.m. to Saturday, August 9th at 5 p.m. — 50 artists will display work in ceramics, fiber, jewelry, painting and more while offering classes, activities and musical performances.
