  • East Side Soup Kitchen received a $100k grant from the Consumers Energy Foundation to upgrade its cooking, dining, storage and serving areas and better serve working families in Saginaw—this funding will help the nonprofit expand its facility to reach more local families in need.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • East Side Soup Kitchen in Saginaw received a $100K People Award grant from the Consumers Energy Foundation to expand its facility and better serve families in need. The planned improvements include a new kitchen, extra storage and a larger dining room—part of an $8.8 million expansion effort.  MLive

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Troy Burton, a local man who struggled with mental health and homelessness, died after a semi-truck ran over him last Wednesday morning in Bridgeport Township—police now await autopsy results to confirm if he was already dead when the truck moved.  ABC 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Menards Inc. has proposed a $20M expansion at its Veterans Memorial Parkway distribution center in northeast Saginaw — a plan that will add nine jobs and serve stores in Michigan and Ohio.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan state parks have finished or begun work on 73 percent of planned upgrades with a $273 million fund from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021—part of Governor Whitmer’s Building Michigan Together Plan. Additional projects will be completed by December 31 as the state clears a long-standing repair backlog.  WNEM
  • The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has urged residents outside southeast counties to squash spotted lanternflies damaging trees and gardens this summer — the insect leaves sticky honeydew that harms plants. Citizens are asked to take photos, note the date, time and location, and report sightings to help slow the pest's spread.  Mid-Michigan NOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lt. Mark Przybylski (manager of Saginaw County’s Emergency Management Division) said heavy rains in mid-Michigan can cause flash flooding when drainage systems are overwhelmed (raising the risk of floodwaters) and urged residents to review the county’s hazard mitigation plan.  WNEM
  • Saginaw’s 3M gallon water tank was raised into place near Webber at the South Washington Avenue intersection on July 14, and it will keep 170,000 customers safe from boil water advisories during power outages while crews complete remaining work by December—using a state grant with city funds covering part of the $18.1 million cost.  MLive
