  • Hundreds of Saginaw County students received school supplies at the Back to School Backpack Giveaway held by the YMCA last Saturday at the Y on Fordney Street—local sponsors and the Saginaw Valley State University football team helped distribute backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, crayons, and other essentials.  WNEM
  • Beauty for Ashes Ministry is a safe space for women survivors of human trafficking and those at risk of sexual exploitation and addiction—its open house on August 5 at 6:30 p.m. will let visitors see the work being done.  Mid-Michigan NOW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Meagan and Brad Valley bought the Evergreen Tavern in Hemlock, a 75 years old establishment, and will soon rename it Bear Den BBQ to serve new barbecue dishes and host events — they plan gradual updates to the building while keeping its historic charm.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Corporation for Public Broadcasting announced it will begin a phased closure after Congress removed its federal funding, which impacted local stations including Delta College Public Media that received nearly $1 million in grants. Most staff positions will end by September 30 while a small team remains through January 2026—handling compliance, financial obligations and rights distribution.  WSGW

  • High school football practices will begin on Monday, Aug. 10 as local teams prepare for the season — the week-by-week schedule covers 27 teams and is subject to change.  MLive
