ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A 33 year old Thomas Township man was critically injured in Kochville Township after losing control of his motorcycle in the Walmart parking lot last Friday—he was taken to Covenant Healthcare and police are investigating the crash. WSGW
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Brooke Allen, 32, who was convicted of driving under the influence of drugs that set off events leading to Trooper Joel Popp’s death on January 24, was sentenced to 93 days in jail—crediting four days already served—with one year probation and 180 hours community service as she was taken into custody in Saginaw County. - ➤ A Saginaw woman was accused of stealing a silver Hyundai Tucson on August 6, driving erratically into a neighboring county and crashing it—when police arrived, she gave a false name and a birth date from the 19th century. MLive
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Today, scenes for the movie CLAY were filmed at the Saginaw Boxing Club where director and actor Alex Wraith shot a training montage and former fighter Don Frye played a coach—head coach Jay Garcia said he welcomed the film crew's use of the gym. The underground boxing story was also shot in Flint and Detroit and will enter post-production over the next several months. Mid-Michigan NOW
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Former Saginaw City Council members and former mayors have called on Councilwoman Monique Lamar-Silvia to resign—she was convicted last month on felony charges of forgery and conspiracy for signing election petitions—and she will be sentenced at the end of August. ABC 12
- ➤ A new lawsuit filed in the Michigan Court of Claims demands Gov. Gretchen Whitmer call a special election to fill the 35th Senate District seat, which has been empty since Jan. 3 leaving 270,000 residents without representation. Attorney Phil Ellison from Outside Legal Counsel PLC filed the suit on behalf of seven residents from Saginaw, Midland and Bay counties and seeks a writ of mandamus, a declaratory judgment + an injunction to schedule the election without delay. - ➤ On Aug. 11, Saginaw City Council unanimously approved a measure directing staff to draft a resolution that will declare Councilwoman Monique Lamar-Silvia’s seat vacant once she is sentenced for three felony election fraud charges later this month—this action follows the city charter rules for council vacancies.
