- ➤ The East Side Soup Kitchen at 940 E. Genesee is hosting four free events this month to support local families, including a bookbag giveaway today from 11 a.m. to noon, a drive-thru food distribution on Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., a Michigan Secretary of State mobile unit on Aug. 18 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and a community breakfast on Aug. 30 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.—each event offering services beyond meals. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Montrose Township Police reported a suspect robbed ChoiceOne Bank on West State St. on Monday at 2:45 p.m.—the suspect left with an undisclosed amount after showing a note to the teller. Mid-Michigan NOW
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Michigan Renaissance Festival will return for its 46th season at Hollygrove Village in Holly starting Saturday, Aug. 16 with jousting, live music, comedy, magicians and other 16th century attractions from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will run each weekend until Sept. 28 and add new experiences such as a Wicked Wand Workshop, Ninja Warrior Challenge and Viking Invasion—bringing themed weekends and special discounts for visitors. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Carrollton Township police officer Bill Doran retired after 48 years of service, starting in 1977 via a grant program and serving on an FBI task force in the 1990s. He ended his final shift by visiting local businesses—demonstrating his community bond—and now plans to spend more time with his family. ABC 12
- ➤ Saginaw City Council voted Monday to have staff draft a resolution to declare Monique Lamar-Silvia’s seat vacant after her June conviction on felony election fraud charges—council members may vote on the measure at their next meeting before her sentencing on Aug. 27. ABC 12
- ➤ Saginaw is working with Fishbeck Engineering to study its 100-year-old Water Treatment Plant—looking at whether to repair it or build a new plant. A meeting will be held on Friday, Aug. 22 at Anderson Enrichment Center at 120 Ezra Rust Drive to share study details and gather public input. WNEM
- ➤ The Saginaw City Council voted to draft a resolution in response to Councilwoman Monique Lamar-Silvia's felony convictions—local officials plan to address comments on her legal situation. WNEM
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Saginaw County Mosquito Abatement Commission reported an increase in West Nile Virus in mosquitoes after tests confirmed 13 positive collections in July in both rural and urban areas (no human cases have been reported so far). Health officials urged residents to cover up and use mosquito repellent when outside and said they will continue to monitor the virus until the end of September. WSGW
