- ➤ TV5 News reported that the Saginaw Soul secured a home court at the former Buena Vista High School gym and that the team will make major renovations before the November tip-off. The Genesee County Board of Canvassers certified LaShawn Johnson as winner in Flint’s 3rd Ward election + a bond proposal for Saginaw Township Community Schools awaits voter approval to fund facility improvements. - ➤ Patriot Ambulance employees hosted a food giveaway on Wednesday morning at Flushing Church of the Nazarene — they provided a truckload of food to families in need through a partnership with Companies Feeding Families. The event was open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis and is one of two annual initiatives to support local residents. ABC 12

- ➤ Grady E. Suggs III, a St. Charles man, pleaded no contest in Saginaw County Circuit Court on Aug. 14 to charges of driving under the influence causing the death of a mother of two and for failing to stop at an accident—he allegedly removed his IVs and fled his hospital after the January crash. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Saginaw Township Community Schools will put a $169.2 million bond proposal on the November 4 ballot to fund building upgrades, enhanced safety measures, and improved learning environments in school facilities (many over 60 years old). The bond will require a 2.85 mill tax increase that may cost homeowners about $11.88 a month based on their taxable value and eligibility for the Michigan Homestead Credit. WSGW

- ➤ The City of Saginaw was awarded a $50,000 Certified Local Government grant from the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office to restore the 1929 Craftsman-style main gate that served the fairgrounds for over 70 years — the project will repair the masonry as the fairgrounds are transformed into a public park. - ➤ Starting Friday and running through September 1, Michigan State Police along with county and municipal officers will boost enforcement and public messaging on impaired driving by checking drivers' sobriety and citing those with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher — a move prompted by 2023 statistics showing hundreds of fatalities from alcohol- and drug-related crashes. - ➤ On Aug. 13, the Michigan Senate passed bills to criminalize AI-generated deepfake porn that uses real people’s images without consent and now the bills head to the House for final approval before reaching Gov. Whitmer’s desk; if signed into law, creators will face up to three years in prison & civil lawsuits. MLive
