COMMUNITY NEWS

  • AAA begins its Tow to Go program today at 6 p.m. for Labor Day weekend, offering a free tow to any driver who feels impaired regardless of membership up to 10 miles (a backup plan to prevent crashes) and will run until Sept. 2 at 6 a.m. The program builds on 25 years of completing 25,000 free tows.  ABC 12

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, Lindt Chocolate held its grand reopening at Birch Run Premium Outlets in a new Section B location near the Nike Store with a 10 a.m. ribbon cutting—shoppers spending $25 or more will receive five free Lindor Truffles as a grand reopening promotion.  ABC 12

CRIME NEWS

  • Councilwoman Monique Lamar-Silvia was sentenced to one year of probation for election fraud charges and must pay about $400, complete 140 hours of community service with Habitat for Humanity and the East Side Soup Kitchen, and finish a cognitive restructuring intervention — the Saginaw City Council approved a measure to vacate her seat.  ABC 12

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A TRIP report showed that drivers in the Tri-cities, Saginaw and Flint areas lost about $1,846 to $2,124 a year from poor roads plus nearly 40% of major roads here were in poor condition, raising extra vehicle repair and fuel costs. The report warned that if lawmakers do not act, falling MDOT funding and the end of the Rebuilding Michigan Program could boost future costs and risk job losses plus worsen travel delays.  WNEM

  • Freeland’s option offense led the Falcons to a 35-0 win over Saginaw United at Arthur Hill Memorial Stadium on Thursday—more than 20 penalties were called during the season opener.  MLive
