CRIME NEWS

  • A Saginaw man named Turan West, 30, was sentenced to 13.5 years in federal prison after he tried to flee a traffic stop and crashed into an ambulance while a handgun was found in his car—highlighting his prior felony convictions.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • On June 30, Saginaw authorities issued a warrant charging 32-year-old Talia C. Teneyuque with felony food stamp fraud after she reportedly used her Bridge Card to buy ingredients and then sold baked goods for profit — a charge that could lead to up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.  MLive
  • Lorenzo Jones Jr., 18, appeared in court on August 28 after pleading no contest to manslaughter, assault with intent to murder and felony firearm charges for fatally shooting 35-year-old Shardae T. Davenport eight times in April 2022—he is set to serve nearly two decades in prison.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • District superintendents in Bay and Saginaw counties warned that without state approval of the K-12 education budget, schools may miss crucial funding for staff pay and programs starting in October—risk increasing if a government shutdown happens by Sept. 30. Community leaders urged residents to call on lawmakers to protect school funding.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Whitmer called a special election for Michigan’s 35th Senate District — covering parts of Bay, Midland, and Saginaw counties — to fill the seat vacated in January when Kristen McDonald Rivet was elected to the House. The special primary is set for February 3 and the general election for May 5 as officials work to address local needs.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • Gov. Whitmer’s legal team argues that courts cannot force her to call a special election for the 35th Senate District vacant seat after Kristen McDonald Rivet resigned, claiming the district’s 270,000 residents lack legal standing. A hearing is set for Sept. 12 in the Michigan Court of Claims—Judge James Robert Redford may hold it before that date.  ABC 12
  • Saginaw Mayor Brenda F. Moore urged residents to stop hosting large house parties amid rising gun violence—warning that these unsanctioned gatherings may spur more tragedy—and to work with law enforcement and local groups to strengthen community safety.  Mid-Michigan NOW

  • SVSU quarterback Mason McKenzie from Caledonia threw for 243 yards and ran for 101 yards as his team lost 28—21 to Northeastern State in the season opener on Thursday at SVSU.  MLive
