  • Five local entrepreneurs will showcase their ideas at the Saginaw Soup Pitch Competition on Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m. in downtown Saginaw at the SVRC Marketplace ballroom—where cash prizes totaling $7,750 will be awarded and free samples from local restaurants will be available.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • On Sept. 6 at about 8:22 a.m., a hit and run on Saginaw’s east side struck 75-year-old David Stanley Pietras near E. Holland and S. 15th and he died later at a local hospital—police say a mid-size, dark-colored SUV with front end damage hit him—investigators ask anyone with information to come forward.  WNEM
  • Federal investigators charged eight additional suspects in a Saginaw cocaine trafficking case after wiretap recordings captured coded conversations—reportedly using terms like 'kids' for cocaine and 'taking kids swimming' for cooking crack.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Veterans Affairs will use $800 million this fiscal year to upgrade health care facilities with improvements that include updated water loops and imaging machines. The program is part of a Non-Recurring Maintenance effort that brings overall spending to nearly $2.8 billion from VA reform savings.  WNEM
  • The Saginaw City Council approved a $20,000 deal on Sept. 8 to buy 1 acre of the old county fairgrounds, which city officials plan to turn into a public park—cleanup efforts increased the site’s value. The housing commission will keep the remaining 51 acres as the city seeks private developers to help restore the historic property.  MLive
