COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today starts a busy weekend in mid-Michigan as events such as the 46th Hemlock Sawdust Days Festival at Richland Township Park, Flint Roller Derby’s season opener on Saturday, and a fall flea market in Midland take place with contests, live music—food vendors and family activities available. Additional plans include film screenings at the Flint Institute of the Arts, a kayaking event called Pints and Paddles in Saginaw Township, Begick Nursery’s 75th Anniversary Family Day, a Michigan Makers Market in Bay City, a trail mix event on Great Lakes Bay Regional Trail, and a Halloween-themed night out at Auto City Speedway in Clio.  MLive
  • The East Side Soup Kitchen and Hidden Harvest began expanding their Hunger Solution Center in Saginaw to store donated food, upgrade their drive-through, and serve more meals in response to rising community need + the project is set to finish next fall with support from $100,000 donations by Consumers Energy and Jolt Credit Union.  Mid-Michigan NOW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MDARD urges animal owners to follow biosecurity practices as wild birds migrate through the state. Although no domestic animals have been affected since March and only a few flocks tested positive this year, owners should disinfect equipment and limit visitors—report suspected cases to MDARD.  WSGW
  • Mourners said goodbye to Wilmer Jones Ham, the first female mayor of Saginaw, at a memorial service held on September 18th. The event honored her long service in local government.  WNEM
  • Two former council members and three previous candidates applied for the council seat after Monique Lamar-Silvia’s felony conviction removed her from office. The council will choose its new member at a special meeting Monday, Sept. 22 at 4 p.m.—a decision that will shape local leadership.  MLive
  • Buena Vista Township held a ribbon-cutting ceremony today to open new township offices repurposed from a former high school — local officials and community members joined to mark the transformation.  WNEM

  • Johnson's Pumpkin Farm is preparing for its 40th fall season and will offer donuts, treats, and fun activities for visitors. The local farm plans to host events that will bring families together as fall approaches.  WNEM
