EDUCATION NEWS

  • Beecher schools will hold a ribbon cutting for its first-ever STEAM SmartLab at Beecher High School in Mt. Morris on Oct. 1 at 5:15 p.m.—the lab, funded by an anonymous donor and backed by local philanthropist Matt Rizik, gives students hands-on access to CNC machines, laser engravers, and 3D printers. The district is piloting the lab to evaluate its benefits before planning to extend the program to Beecher Middle School when the old high school building reopens.  MLive

FINANCE NEWS

  • Tri-Star Trust, a local financial consultant with 25 years of service, will hold a ceremonial groundbreaking on Oct 8 for its new 15,000-square-foot headquarters along the Saginaw Riverfront. Construction will begin in spring 2026 & be completed in summer 2027.  WNEM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mourners celebrated former mayor Wilmer Jones Ham’s life at a downtown funeral on Sept. 19—honoring her role as Saginaw’s first woman mayor. She died on Sept. 8 and is remembered as a trailblazer in local government.  MLive
  • Saginaw City Council will choose one new member at a special 4 p.m. Monday meeting on September 22 from 11 candidates, including two former council members and three 2024 candidates, to fill the vacant seat formerly held by Monique Lamar-Silvia. The council will interview candidates and continue voting until one receives at least five votes—ensuring the winner serves until voters choose a permanent replacement in November.  MLive
  • City crews will perform utility work in the right-of-way on Court Street between Trier Street & Bay Street, causing a westbound lane closure from Monday, Sept. 22 at 7 a.m. until Friday, Sept. 26 at 4 p.m., and residents are urged to choose alternate routes.  WNEM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Great Lakes Bay Health Centers will launch a fully outfitted mobile bus called the Mobile Vision Unit (offering eye exams, eye disease checks, and glasses) to serve schools and community centers in Saginaw. The service (targeting children and community members with limited access to traditional care) will begin soon.  Mid-Michigan NOW
  • Michigan health leaders expanded access to the COVID-19 vaccine ahead of the flu and RSV season—ensuring it is available for all ages. They issued a standing recommendation to support vaccine availability for everyone.  WNEM
