COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Saginaw Food Club and Kitchen will hold a pumpkin giveaway on October 10th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 310 Meredith Street—volunteers will take any donation to help supply produce, dairy, and meat for the planned grocery store opening in 2026.  WSGW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Transportation began resurfacing 8.4 miles of M-13 from M-57 to Fry Road on Sept. 22, with milling, joint repairs and new pavement markings included in the $2.5 million project—expected to finish on Nov. 14 and support 24 jobs.  WNEM
  • Saginaw City Council appointed Tobias Young to fill the seat left open after Monique Lamar-Silvia was removed for election fraud charges — he was selected from nine candidates and will serve until November 2026 when voters decide on the remainder of the term. Young is a General Motors electrician and business owner known for his community work.  WNEM
  • Crews are nearing the final stages of construction on Sanford Dam—more than five years after the catastrophic flood, progress now offers hope for long-term recovery.  WNEM
  • On Monday, Sept. 22, local councils met — with Saginaw interviewing candidates to replace a councilwoman sentenced on felony charges and Flint holding a meeting ahead of a councilman’s preliminary court exam for domestic violence. Road work closed an I-75 lane in Genesee County from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Midland Council discussed nonprofit and proclamation matters while GST Michigan Works! hosted a job fair in Flint — each event addressing key community concerns.  WNEM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Teamsters Local 332 nurses walked off the job on Labor Day at Henry Ford Genesys in Grand Blanc Township as talks over premium nurse-to-patient ratios remain stalled — a federal mediator met for six hours but no progress was made and the hospital stays open.  WNEM

SPORTS NEWS

  • Millington’s Abigail Reis won the Crawford Kennedy Memorial Cross Country Classic girls race at Laker High on Saturday — posting a season-best time of 19 minutes, 44.14 seconds — and helped her team finish in fifth place.  MLive
  • Saginaw Soul announced on Sept. 21 that the team delayed its debut until next season due to unique structural and operational challenges in the league— the organization said the pause will help ensure the professionalism, excitement, and stability the community deserves.  WNEM
  • Saginaw-area high school football players impressed in Week 4, and fans can vote for the MLive Saginaw Player of the Week by 11 p.m. Thursday. The poll gives local communities a way to recognize the best talent from their schools.  MLive
