BUSINESS NEWS

  • Amazon and the FTC reached a $2.5B settlement that set aside $1.5B to pay eligible Prime users up to $51 if they were unknowingly enrolled and had limited use of benefits—others had to file a claim within 180 days. The agreement required Amazon to improve its sign‐up practices with a clear decline option and was subject to court approval.  MLive
  • Bay City Boat Lines, a three-generation business, is looking for a new owner to run its Saginaw River tours from the 2026 season—while the Princess Wenonah continues its fall tours in 2025. The Fournier and Judd families said only serious buyers with a funding plan will be considered to keep the business rooted in the community.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • A special prosecutor said no criminal charges will be filed against staff at Saginaw County Animal Care & Control after state police looked into claims by veterinarian Dr. Joseph Kline that the shelter did not properly care for two injured dogs—one dog had its leg amputated and the other received surgery and was adopted.  ABC 12

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mid Michigan College and the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe will host a free Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebration on Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to noon in the Community Room at the Mount Pleasant campus. Indigenous chef Sam Anglin, who has spent over 20 years mentoring his community, will deliver a keynote address at 10:30 a.m. and conduct a food demonstration at 11 a.m. — with cultural performances bookending the event.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Saginaw Public Schools welcomed its first student board members as two students and two alternates joined the board on Sept. 17th and attended an action meeting on Sept. 24th. They served as nonvoting advisors to share insights with district leaders — linking the student body with the Board of Education.  WNEM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Whitmer, Senate Majority Leader Brinks and House Speaker Hall reached a budget agreement in Lansing today that will pass before Oct. 1 to fund education, roads and tax relief for Michigan families. Lawmakers say the deal will prevent a government shutdown — a move that addresses key state priorities.  WNEM
  • Attorney General Dana Nessel joined 22 attorneys general in filing a motion asking a U.S. District Court in Massachusetts to block the new federal budget bill's Defund Provision that would cut Medicaid funds to Planned Parenthood. The move will keep federal funds flowing to health centers—ensuring low-income patients continue receiving essential care.  WNEM
  • Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel won a major case against DHS— a federal court in Rhode Island ruled that requiring states to enforce immigration laws for emergency funds broke the law. The decision maintains public safety resources for disaster response.  WNEM

HEALTH NEWS

  • As flu season nears, doctors urge Saginaw residents to get their flu shot and follow good hygiene—washing hands and covering coughs to limit the spread.  WNEM
  • MyMichigan Medical Center Saginaw will host a three-session Wellness Wednesday Lunch and Learn series starting Oct. 8, focusing on online security, stroke awareness and healthy aging—featuring a U.S. Secret Service agent and leading physicians—and charging $10 per session or $25 for all sessions.  MLive
